Canvas was originally made using hemp yarns, deriving its name from the ‘Vulgar Latin’ word cannapaceus (made of hemp). ‘Canvas’ now describes heavy and coarsely woven cotton fabric. The words ‘duck’ and ‘canvas’ are used interchangeably.
